Bendis is really working with the best of the best here, and while the storytelling may have suffered slightly by the shifting art teams, it’s hard not to love a book that lets guys like Kevin Maguire cut loose with Superman. But The Man of Steel has managed to avoid those pitfalls by only employing bona fide superstars in each issue. It really messes with the mood, tone, and flow of a series. Generally, we’d say switching artists every single issue is a bad move. The use of the color red throughout the book creates a mood and tone that will stick with you long after you finish reading the final page. We can’t sell Joshua Hixson short either, because he is a brilliant storyteller who brings so much to this issue. Christopher Sebela is one of our favorite writers in comics today, and books like Shanghai Red are the reason we have some much affection for his work. It’s got a mean edge to it in the best possible way. From the massacre that dominates the first few pages to the constant, haunting visions of corpses floating in blood red water, Shanghai Red is not for the faint of heart. Those of us who grew up watching the X-Men animated series will be bawling like a bunch of babies, as the last few pages of this issue are truly beautiful.
(Thanks a lot, New York Times!) But if you managed to go into this thing fresh, be prepared to shed a few tears. There’s a real chance the ending to this issue has already been spoiled for you. Marc Guggenheim and David Marquez bring real emotion and weight to these pages. It’s just quiet moments with some of our favorite characters and it’s amazingly well done. It basically features no action or massive set pieces. X-Men Gold #30 is a damn near perfect X-Men comic book.
